Lupita Island | Lake Tanganyika
Lupita Island – Private Island Resort
Completed in 2009, Lupita Island is the ultimate private island retreat, offering luxurious accommodations set amidst a pristine natural habitat. Located on Lake Tanganyika in western Tanzania, the longest lake in the world, the second oldest and second deepest lake in the world, this 130-acre private island resort has eleven lavishly decorated, thatched-roof living spaces and two family cottages that have been strategically positioned to offer both privacy and breathtaking, uninterrupted views of Africa’s second largest lake.
Lupita Island offers welcome luxury after your days in the bush. A two hour fifty minute flight southwest from the Serengeti, it is the ideal venue for retreats or milestone celebrations such as anniversaries, honeymoons, birthdays, and graduations. Private island rental is also available.
Beach and Safari
The shimmering waters and sandy beaches make Lupita Island the perfect complement to an adventurous African safari. As a guest, you may enjoy a variety of water sports and excursions to tiny, virtually undiscovered local villages or simply soak in the tranquil beauty of the island from the privacy of your open-air room. Fun and relaxation are the rule here, and it is the ideal way to end a vacation before heading back to the real world.
The thirteen villas at Lupita Island are spacious and exquisitely appointed. Our smallest are 1800 square feet and our two-bedroom, two-bath family suites are 2500 square feet. The resort design features undulating roofs thatched from local grasses, and the lakeside of each room is completely open-air, so you can enjoy the lake breeze and soak in your natural surroundings. As you relax under our powerful waterfall showers, with bathroom walls open to nature, life’s stresses simply melt away. Each villa includes bathtubs and plunge pools on either the deck or terrace, as well as a bar and large living area, ideal for relaxation or entertaining.
Activities on Lupita Island
Lupita Island is an ideal place to relax and recharge before heading back into the real world, so the schedule is open here, allowing guests to spend the days however they like. There are many choices to do as much or as little as is desired.
Lake Tanganyika’s waters are clear and calm, providing the ultimate setting for water sport activities. Kayaks and canoes are available to guests to explore beaches around the islands. Snorkeling and PADI-certified scuba diving take you to the underwater world of Lake Tanganyika, which teems with hundreds of species of cichlids found nowhere else on earth, while water-skiing and sailing provide a great and adventurous way to exercise.
Alternatively, experience the lake’s tranquil waters aboard our lake cruiser the Windsor Rose. Fish from the deck, dive into the mile-deep water, or simply enjoy hors d’oeuvres and cocktails watching the sunset over the lake’s water.
In addition to the water, one can lounge on the beach or by the pool, which includes a full bar. Our spa is perched high on the hill so one can enjoy a relaxing massage, balmy breezes and an amazing lake view. A fitness center is available for those requiring a more traditional workout, and the games room offers table tennis, pool, darts and other games. Don’t forget to shop for souvenirs at our gift shop!
Walking trails abound on the island, and for the more ambitious there is an isthmus connecting Lupita to a neighboring island that is a wonderful example of a traditional fishing village. Even with the wide variety of activities available, many guests choose to spend their time luxuriating in their “rooms-without-walls.” Basking in the sun, relaxing in your personal plunge pool and taking in views of the lake with a perfect cocktail are all ideal ways to experience the beauty and tranquility of Lupita Island, balmy breezes and an amazing lake view.
Cooling breezes flow through Lupita’s dining room, which sits at the highest point of the island. The calm ambiance and extraordinary view of the lake delights the eye, but it is our menu of fresh fish – delicious grilled Nile perch and a creatively seasoned Kuwe straight from the lake – that satisfies the palate. Our chefs specialize in modern African cuisine, prepared with fresh local ingredients and always accompanied by our delicious desserts.
Lunches are packed for excursions, while an elaborate picnic buffet is set up right on the beach. Table schemes can be altered according to the composition of the group, or you can arrange to have dinner in your room or by the pool. With no more than 28 guests on the island at any time, dining is always an intimate experience.
Local Cultural Experiences
Interacting with local communities is always a highlight of our guests’ stay here. There are two small, traditional African villages close to Lupita Island that represent unique opportunities to experience village life unchanged over the centuries.
A vigorous one-hour walk away to an adjoining island, guests can visit a traditional African fishing village. Meeting the residents, seeing how they live and work, and interacting with the children is an unforgettable experience. A half-hour boat ride away, there is another village with a weekly market where Lupita Island chefs purchase fresh fish and produce. Other than Lupita’s guests, these villagers see few, if any, outsiders.
